Dunbar Alumni Jazz Ensemble

Charles Funn, trombone

Trombonist Charles Funn is a dedicated music instructor. The 18-member Dunbar Jazz Ensemble consists, mostly, of former students of Baltimore’s Dunbar High School who were instructed by Mr. Funn.

Established in 1995, the ensemble has performed with Wynton Marsalis at Baltimore’s Meyerhoff Symphony Hall and at the prestigious International Association of Jazz Educators convention in New York. In March 2001, it won first place at a high-school band competition at the University of Maryland-Eastern Shore.

Regrettably the music program in Baltimore City schools is greatly reduced compared to it’s glorious past however we are truly blessed that dedicated educators like Charles Funn hasn’t stopped working with these young gifted musicians. The group performs the music of composers from Duke Ellington, William Thomas “Billy” Strayhorn, William “Count” Basie to Maurice White of Earth, Wind & Fire.

Be Mo Jazz

The Be Mo Jazz project, organized by CA-FAM III, Inc.,  is an effort to honor the history, celebrate the presence and ensure the future of jazz music and culture. Baltimore is a perfect city to create such a project because of its rich history of celebrating indigenous music traditions. And the Mid-Atlantic region [PA, DE, MD, DC, VA, NC] is overflowing with musical talent to be both showcased and developed.
